Trends in local Afghan conflicts Synthesis June 2009 Final


This Synthesis report brings together the findings of the 5 provincial conflict analysis reports on Badakhshan, Kunduz, Kabul, Wardak and Ghazni and provides important analysis on the trends in local Afghan conflicts including the increasing intensity of local conflict; the increase in communal conflict and the annual cycle of conflict. The synthesis paper also outlines the implications for the new understanding of the effectiveness of peacebuilding programming, the impact that development and governance activities have on conflict and the links between local conflict and higher order conflicts.

Conflict analysis: Chak and Sayedabad districts, Wardak province April 2009


This is the fifth and final report in CPAU’s series on conflict dynamics in Afghanistan, focusing on Chak and Sayedabad districts in Wardak. This report completes the conflict analysis series by demonstrating the need for long-term high quality monitoring of local conflict dynamics. The paper also argues that the impact of insecurity and non-governmental groups in the province have had a significant impact on the way in which local conflicts are resolved.

Conflict analysis: Jaghori and Malistan districts, Ghazni province April 2009


This is the fourth report in CPAU’s series on conflict dynamics in Afghanistan, focusing on Jaghori and Malistan district in Ghazni province. This report uses new data which identifies some of the trends and dynamics in local conflict in Jaghori and Malistan in the context of local, provincial and regional influences. The report demonstrates the impact of wider insecurity on local conflict dynamics, particularly on the key areas of local conflict such as land.

Conflict analysis: Farza and Kalakan districts, Kabul province March 2009


This is the third report in CPAU’s series on conflict dynamics in Afghanistan, focusing on rural Kabul. This report uses new data which identifies some of the trends and dynamics in local conflict in Farza and Kalakan districts in the context of local, provincial and regional influences. The report demonstrates the key importance of land in local conflict, but also demonstrates the impact that Kabul city has on the Shomali plain.

Conflict analysis: Kunduz city, Kunduz province March 2009


Conflict dynamics are affected by a complex range of factors in Afghanistan, this is particualrly important when carrying out peacebuilding and conflict resolution activities in urban environments. This report uses new data which identifies some of the trends and dynamics in local conflict in Kunduz city in northern  Afghanistan in the context of local, provincial and regional influences. The conflict analysis of Kunduz is the second of five reports looking at conflict dynamics in Badakhshan, Kunduz, Kabul, Wardak and Ghazni.

The conflict analysis of Baharak is the first of 5 reports looking at conflict dynamics in Badakhshan, Kunduz, Kabul, Wardak and Ghazni.

Conflict Mapping Exercise and Report for Action Aid Afghanistan


The nature of conflict in Afghanistan is very complicated and diverse. To investigate ways that NGOs can work on conflict in Afghanistan ActionAid Afghanistan asked CPAU to carry out a conflict mapping and analysis and develop a discussion paper. A summary of the findings from the mapping, which includes an assessment of conflict drivers in Afghanistan, can be accessed from the link above.

Roles and Functions of Religious Civil Society in Afghanistan 2007


To what extent have Afghan religious leaders been involved in the post-2001 efforts to build a new state and foster development? What are their perspectives on the unfolding process, and on the various actors – Afghan or international – that are driving it? Are there ways in which to engage Afghan religious leaders more thoroughly in the work for stability and development? These questions are at the core of this report, which we explore in case studies from two distinctly different areas of the country, Sayedabad in Wardak province and Kunduz city in Kunduz province.

Armed Groups and Peace Processes Afghanistan 2005


This paper researches into community opinion about the effectiveness of the demobilization, disarmament & re-integration process (DDR), as well as the peace process, the commanders, community councils and the re-newed fighting. Based on data gathered through questionnaires distributed in 5 provinces and 9 districts this research draws conclusions about everyday peoples perceptions of  the international security forces, security and  major threats to permanent peace.

NSP Mid-term Evaluation Report


In November 2005, the Post-war Reconstruction and Development Unit (PRDU) at the University of York, U.K., was contracted by the MRRD to undertake a mid-term evaluation of the NSP over a period of 6 months. Two of CPAU’s present staff were also an integral part of field research process. The central aim of the evaluation was to examine the achievements and drawbacks of the Programme two years into its implementation. The midway point for the NSP was seen as an opportune moment to reflect on what has been achieved and to make recommendations for improving the post mid-term evaluation phase (Phase 2) of the Programme.

Afghan NGOs Communication System


This research paper seeks to identify communications issues and themes for the better use of the planned web-based resource centre. This report represents the view and perspectives of a variety of people in the partner organizations. It represents a step forward to identifying the communication barriers within & outside the Partner NGOs. To identify proper ways to develop and use the web-based resource centre to find practical ways to incorporate the use of internet into Partner NGO activities.

A Conflict Analysis of Afghanistan


The situation in Afghanistan is still characterized by substantial violent conflicts, insurgencies, and challenges regarding political & social as well as security matters, & cannot really be described as post-conflict. This research paper considers aid and other interventions based on these developments taking place in the country.

Research on Hazara District 2003


This research report reflects the experience of Jaghori District in Ghazni Provinces. It is important to an understanding of how communities work to prevent conflict and war, and to resist strong pressure to change their culture and priorities.  It offers a complex, nuanced example of determination and perseverance.  This is not a stark, heroic, sacrificial stance (although there is a certain heroism in persisting against such unremitting pressure.)  This is an example of pragmatism as well as principle.

Advocacy Practices; Afghanistan 2001 onwards


This research paper is an attempt to help both national and international actors improve their understanding of and increase their effectiveness in Advocacy related activities in Afghanistan. For commitment and funds for the advocacy sector to continue, it is important for the actors to develop baseline measurements to measure progress and determine the impact of their advocacy efforts and to establish whether as a result of these activities, there are any major changes & positive contributions to the reconstruction process of Afghanistan. This study focuses on Policy & Community level advocacy & was conducted through interviews and meetings with individuals & organizations involved in advocacy in Afghanistan.
